The big noise debate: What is the city?

By Eamonn Lavery

City Centre art space/music venue Static Gallery was served with a Noise Abatement Notice in December, forcing the art space/music venue to refrain from any events involving "loud amplified noise".

Static Gallery then became the forum for a public debate on whether a city which was European Capital of Culture only 4 years ago should be doing more to nurture and protect its cultural infrastructure, or whether the effort would be better spent protecting city centre dwellers from unwanted noise.

The panel for the debate consisted of Cllr Steve Munby, and musician Daniel Hunt (from the band Ladytron). It was chaired by Doug Clelland, and there were a large number of people in the audience who were keen to get their own point across.
