David Price & Tony Thompson weigh-in ahead of the Echo Arena fight in LiverpoolBy Eamonn Lavery
Liverpool's David Price faces his first challenge against a big American opponent when he takes on Tony "The Tiger" Thompson in the Echo Arena on Saturday 23rd February.
The reigning heavyweight champion will be taking on, in Thompson, a fighter who, at 41, has seen better days, but who is not to be taken lightly, having previously held an Inter-Continental belt, and challenged Vladimir Klitscho for the World Title twice. In a distinguished career, Thompson has only lost 3 of his 36 fights, two of which were the afforementioned title fights.
The American - 18st 10lbs - weighed in at over a stone heavier than the much taller scouser, who tipped the scales at 17st 9lbs.
Despite the weight advantage, undefeated Price will be expected to stop Thompson in a matter of rounds. The Liverpool fighter has ended 12 of his 15 fights in under 5 rounds, and only 2 of his fights have gone the full way. With an emphatic win, Price could be putting himself in the frame for a world title fight before the end of the year.
An impressive undercard contains two of the most promising Liverpool fighters. Steve Williams going for the British Light-Welterweight Title against current champion Darren Hamilton, whilst Liverpool's Kevin Satchell will be defending his British and Commonwealth Flyweight title against Belfast scrapper Luke Wilton.
